Website tools

Well now that you have the domain name you will need to make your website. There are so many choices of editors that you can use to create your website I’ll name just a few.

First of all a basic editor is NVU. This editor is good enough to get started making a decent site but it does have its limitations. For example, it doesn’t do php and it is not that good on css (don’t worry if you don’t know what this means). However, it is free and the latest software produced by the developers Kompozer does edit php and css (sometimes!).

The mother of all editors is, of course, Dreamweaver owned by Adobe. There are two problems with Dreamweaver though. First up, the price tag which is about $500 or more and secondly, for a beginner it has way too much information and takes up way too much room on a small hard drive.

One of my favourite free software is Wordpress. This website is created using Wordpress. Wordpress is open source software and can either be self hosted or hosted by wordpress (with some restrictions). The reason why I like it? Well, first of all it is really simple to use but that doesn’t mean it’s basic. Once you master the simple tasks you can really make wordpress sing by using other bits and pieces, called plug ins to enhance the website experience. The second reason why I love wordpress is that the wordpress community is so helpful continually making free themes (of which there are 1000’s) and plug ins (too many to mention here) for use by free by webmasters like you and me. You can’t get much better than that!

Finally, if you are using Wordpress there is no need to use any complicated coding or learn anything (unless you want to) and you can literally have your website up and running in 10 minutes - seriously!

Another great free software is HyperVRE. The free version of this software is great if you just want to whip up adsense style sites. If you want a few more bells and whistles then there is an upgrade to a paid version. When you are just starting out though you really can’t go wrong the free version. Once the money is coming in then youn might want to upgrade to the paid version. Click here to check out HyperVre.

Okay well you have chosen the software to create your site and hopefully you have added a few pages of text so let’s check the code and see if there are any problems. We’ll use this free html validator tool to check the validation of our code. After we’ve done that we’ll check the validation or our css file (if we have one) by using the css validator. Then finally, let’s check if there are any broken links by using the link checker tool.

One last thing… before we load up our website we need to give the search engines something to feed on so let’s add some meta tags to our files. This meta tag generator will walk you through the creation of your meta tags and you just need to copy and paste into your website

Finally, one last thing before we move on is robots text. While we usually love to have the search engines buzzing around our websites there are often some pages that we do not want indexed by the search engines. For example; if we are selling downloadable e-books we wouldn’t want the search engines to index the download page as some people (who know the type) would download your e-books without paying! This problem is easily solved by adding some robots text to our web pages. No need to panic, here is a free tool that will create the text for you.
