You can blog your wage
It might be hard for some people to believe but there are many people on the internet actually blogging for a living. Darren at www.problogger.com is a classic and classy example.
Really, there is not a lot of difference between blogging for your wage and being a freelance journalist…except for that whole journalist school thing (several years out of your life - if you get in!), finding contract work, wondering where the next job is going to come from and not being able to choose the topic that you want to write about. Other than that it’s pretty well the same…
Seriously, if you haven’t given blogging a go now is the time to start thinking about it. Blogging can help you redirect traffic to your “main” website using Web 2.0 strategies and provide a new audience for your product and service.
What I love about blogging and in particular my wordpress blog are:
- it is so easy to use….if you are like me (non techie) you will find Wordpress or Blogger blogs a dream to work with.
- You can plan your posts in advance. No more ftp with each page to gradually increase content in your site. With a Wordpress blog you just upload all your content and set the date that you want it to be published. Fantastic - this gives you more time to go to the beach, get a coffee or start on your next site!
- Free, Free, Free - the Wordpress community in particular is all about open source. Wordpress is free software. If you host your blog on the Wordpress domain then your hosting is free as well! Themes (templates) are created by many talented designers and you can download literally thousands of these for free. New ones are being made each day by these creative folks. Enhancements to your site (plug ins) are also free. Rarely do you have to pay for anything when you use Wordpress, although you can donate if you want. Most designers will accept donations and cups of coffee but you are not obliged to open your wallet.
To help you start to Blog your Wage check out this guide. Guide is a bit of an underestimate actually. This is 83 pages of good reading. You are guided on:
- what topic your blog should be about,
- how to get traffic; and
- how to monetise your site.
In addition, there is a great action plan at the back and piles of resources throughout the book.
This is definetely one of the few guides that is underpriced at only $7.00! As soon as I read Blog Your Wage I paid straight away to get master resale rights because this is not junk (like so much on my hard drive). This is good material and at a great price!
